Chapter Sixteen

Trying to drive into Sausalito on a Thursday night for one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s most anticipated events of the year would have been an exercise in severe frustration. To avoid this, they took a cab from the Ritz-Carlton and reached the front gates of the Harford estate at 8:12 pm.

“We aren’t too late,” Lisa said cheerfully as she handed the cab driver a ten-dollar tip. “Fashionably late has its perks.”

“It looks like we’re right on time.” Johnny thanked the cabbie again and slid out first to open the door for his partner.

The cab accelerated away as soon as they were out and wove through the somewhat heavy traffic on the road that ran past the home of the Harford family and this evening’s venue. Most of the other vehicles dropping their high-society passengers were town cars or Lexuses with private drivers or limousines.

“At least we ain’t payin’ for a valet,” the dwarf muttered as they followed the thick but rapidly moving crowd toward the estate’s huge wrought iron front gates.

“After the cost of getting a seat for this?” Lisa smirked at him. “A valet would have been a drop in the bucket.”

“Oh, sure. Do you think we should have hired one of those stretch limos for only the two of us?”

“No one will know we took a cab and no one cares.”

“That’s what I thought.”

Light conversation and laughter filled the front area of the estate where the top society business moguls, charity founders, and old-money representatives of California—all dressed in their finest attire at the end of the summer—had gathered to wait. The line ahead of them paused briefly at the entrance to the gates and a group of Jasper Harford’s security team—more shifters in dark suits with walkie-talkie watches—marked the foundation’s “donating participants” present on the guest list.

“At least we ain’t gotta steal a golden ticket from another damn thief for this one,” Johnny muttered.

“Oh, come on.” Lisa elbowed him subtly in the arm. “This is so much better than having to steal and lie our way into a fancy event.”

“Uh-huh. You ain’t the one coughin’ up for so-called donations.”

“I wasn’t the one who enjoyed blasting a supply warehouse to smithereens to get our hands on the Monster’s Ball ticket either.” She adjusted her hold on her silver handbag and studied him boldly from the corner of her eye. “But I like this suit on you better than the last one.”

He spread his arms somewhat sheepishly and glanced down at himself. “It’s white.”

“Off-white. You look like you fit right in.”

“I look like I’m tryin’ to play a Jasper Harford knock-off.” The dwarf snorted. “Look at this. All the fellas playin’ the same game in suits that look like they’ve been dipped in milk.”

“Until Labor Day, Johnny, white’s the way to go. I told you that when we chose your suit.”

“It feels like a reverse funeral.”

Her peal of laughter made several of the estate’s guests in front of them turn to cast her approving glances and gracious smiles.
